Mobility for Survivors, Freedom from Abuse
W.A.V.E. (Walker Assistance for Victim Empowerment) is dedicated to providing immediate access to mobility aids for survivors of domestic violence. About 1 in 4 Americans live with a disability and over 5% of individuals aged 18 to 55 rely on mobility equipment. Individuals with disabilities are almost twice as likely to experience domestic violence, making the need for equipment greater in safehouses and shelters. Many survivors are forced to flee without their mobility aids or, it's possible that if they didn't need aids before, they are too injured to walk well, making it difficult to get to the bathrooms, get to the showers, go to the dining area to eat, or participate in essential and productive activities once they reach a safehouse or shelter.
W.A.V.E. aims to place loaner walkers in every shelter and safehouse to support these survivors as they regain their independence, including securing their own mobility equipment. You can help by donating a new or used walker. Walkers are inexpensive, but desperately needed by disabled individuals. Unfortunately, the budget is barely sufficient to cover daily necessities for the many survivors without special needs, leaving those with mobility impairments underserved.
Our goal is to to equip safehouses and shelters in the Washoe County area through walker donations. Once this goal is achieved, we will focus on getting walkers into domestic violence shelters across Northern Nevada. Your support ensures that survivors can access the mobility they need during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
