If you have a walker that you no longer need, consider donating it to W.A.V.E. in the Reno/Sparks area. These walkers can provide essential support to survivors of domestic violence who have had to flee their homes under dire circumstances. Often, these individuals cannot bring their mobility equipment with them due to size constraints, time limitations, or because their abuser has prevented them from taking them or has destroyed them.
I accept used walkers in good working condition. While I can make minor repairs, such as replacing the plastic feet, I am unable to accept walkers with broken folding push-button mechanisms, legs that won’t adjust, or severely pitted or uneven wheels. The appearance of the walker doesn’t matter—only that it functions properly.
Used walkers are usually priced around $5-$10. You can help survivors get to the medical appointments they need and connect with charities or insurance providers that can supply them with their own long-term mobility aids.
If you’re getting rid of a walker you no longer need or are a regular thrift store-goer, we encourage you to pick up any walkers in decent shape that you find and donate them to this cause. Your donation can make a significant difference in the life of a survivor, providing them with the mobility they need to begin their journey toward healing and independence.
If you are outside the Reno/Sparks area you can look up the domestic violence resource centers that serve your community and let them know that you would like to donate a walker to be used at one of their shelters or safehouses.
